This is of a group of young boys in the earthquake damaged district of rural Nepal helping to sort through the usable and unusable rubble from the previous house. They gathered some usable bricks and would bring them back to the build site to be used on the new house.

After the earthquakes of 2015, the local lake was drained and the river rerouted 2km out of the way. These women, and sometimes children, would walk about 5km round trip just for water. This village has since received running water so this is no longer an issue.

These women would carry heavy loads and even babies over their backs while strapped to their head. The terrain is very hilly, dusty, and far from a water source and these women seemed to navigate it with ease. I would imagine they have developed bigger hearts and lungs over the years.

The children from this village sat and watched us when we first arrived. They were timid about interacting but after a while they joined in and worked very hard to rebuild their houses.

During my time volunteering in sipapokhare, these three women were always cooking together, sitting around together, and getting water together. I’m not sure but they felt like sisters to me.
